I eventually found that it was caused by the Dell issued Realtek HD Audio driver v 6.01.6086 interacting badly with Skype. I managed to get things working by changing to the Windows 10 default HD Audio driver v10.0.10586.0. I would like to be able to get a download of this default driver for future installations rather than relying on roll-back.
